It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a ... bird!
Yesterday morning, when I was driving into D.C., I caught sight of a large object sliding through the sky outside the driver's side window. While trying to avoid merging traffic, I turned to get a better look. The object quickly resolved itself to be a large bird with a white tail. Then I noticed the white head and golden beak. The big, beautiful bald eagle glided effortlessly through a strand of trees. Then I spotted its mate, soaring alongside. Finally I realized they were approaching an enormous nest sitting high in the trees. I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement as a grin grew across my face. Today I retraced my route, hoping to spy the birds again, but they were nowhere to be found — perhaps fishing? Maybe hidden in their nest? Nevertheless, I pulled over and snapped a quick photo from my phone. It's more impressive in person, of course, but it gives a sense of the enormity of nest.
