Have asthma, will travel
Well, we spent all day Sunday traveling (Sammy helped to keep track of our various modes of transport: car, shuttle bus, escalator, tarmac shuttle, jetway, jet, minivan) from D.C. to Hawaii. The weather here is beautiful... mid 70s to mid 80s.
Flying in, it was amazing to see the Pacific Ocean interrupted by these volcanic islands. Kauai, the island where we’re staying, appears to be a sunken volcano. High ridges line the coast while a flat inner bowl is filled with luscious green flora. All of the rocks are volcanic. It has the feeling of being on another planet. As we drove along the coastline, a monk seal bathed himself in the sun.
Cynthia’s sister, brother-in-law and their two boys picked us up (and made us dinner). By the time we got to our condo, it was midnight our time, 6 p.m. local time. So, we were pretty beat. After a shower and dinner, we pretty much went right to bed. Then the fun began.
Then Sammy had an asthma attack in the middle of the night. So for most of the night, Cyn and I were up with her, propping her up, getting her to breath hot, humid air from the shower, and eventually getting her to skull some prednazone, courtesey of her cousin, Ryan.
At 4:30 this morning, local time (10:30 a.m. D.C.-time for those keeping score at home), Sammy woke up and shouted, “let’s go swimming!”
After a couple-hour delay, we got on our bathers and headed to a small beach just down the path. I have to admit, it’s quite lovely, even when exhausted.
Today I’ll take the advice of a friend from work and head to the local produce market. Anyway, I’ll write more soon about the $14 gallons of milk and backyard bananas.
